Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Content |

 |
Carbon dioxide content or total CO2 is composed of bicarbonate ion, carbonic acid and dissolved carbon dioxide. Bicarbonate accounts for 90% of the total at physiological pH. CO2 content by itself is of little clinical use. Knowledge of the CO2 content together with pH and pCO2 is necessary for evaluation of acid base status. A low CO2 level may be associated with metabolic acidosis or compensated respiratory alkalosis. High CO2 content may be associated with metabolic alkalosis or compensated respiratory acidosis.
Reference range is 23 - 32 mEq/L. Critical values are < 10 mEq/L and >40 mEq/L.
Specimen requirement is one SST tube of blood.
