Ethosuximide is an anticonvulsant used in treatment of absence seizures. Serum trough levels are useful to assess compliance or adequate drug regimens initially and with changes in regimen or physiologic state. They are also helpful in confirming clinical symptoms of intoxication. Steady state drug levels are achieved after 10 days of treatment. Trough drug levels should be drawn immediately preceding the next dose or at least 6 hours after dose. Therapeutic range (trough) is 40 75 ug/mL. Concentrations greater that 99 ug/mL are considered toxic. Specimen requirement is one green top (heparin) tube of blood. |
