Inhibitors of factor VIII coagulant activity are the most common of the specific coagulation factor inhibitors. They may arise in hemophiliac patients in response to factor replacement therapy, or can occur spontaneously in immunological disorders, the post-partum state, some malignancies, old age, and with the use of certain drugs. If a mixing study (see anticoagulants, circulating) and factor VIII assay suggest the presence of a factor VIII inhibitor, it will be quantitated and reported in Bethesda units.
