Direct fluorescent antibody staining of respiratory specimens is a rapid diagnostic test for Legionella. Its sensitivity is less than that of culture because large numbers of organisms must be present before they can be readily visualized. The reported sensitivity is 33-70%, with a specificity of 96-99%.
Reference range is negative.
The preferred specimen is respiratory secretions obtained by bronchoscopy. Good quality sputum may also be sent. The specimen should be refrigerated in a screw-capped sterile container after collection.
