Patients with limbic encephalitis usually present with seizures, memory loss, mood changes, personality changes, psychosis, delirium or sleep disorders. A history of autoimmune disorders, cancer, or cancer risk factors increase the likelihood of autoimmune etiology.

Several autoantibodies can cause limbic encephalitis including NMDA receptor antibody, GABA Type B receptor antibody and AMPA receptor antibody. When these autoantibodies occur in the presence of cancer, they are classified as paraneoplastic antibodies.

Detailed articles about these autoantibodies have been posted on ClinLabNavigator in the Test Interpretation section.
