A large outbreak of Enterovirus D68 began in the greater Kansas City metropolitan region in August of this year. Several hundred children have been infected. Many of these cases were confirmed to be EV D68 by the Centers for Disease Control. Cases with similar symptoms are now being reported throughout the Midwestern and Southern United States including Kansas Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio and Oklahoma. It is not known whether the increase in recognized cases is attributable to improved diagnostic tests or the emergence of a more pathogenic strain.
This virus can be rapidly detected in respiratory specimens by two FDA approved real time PCR multipathogen detection systems. Confirmation requires gene sequencing, which is available in a limited number of laboratories.
